En 2006 fue descubierto con el telescopio espacial Hubble un brillo de 100 días de duración, que no coordina con ninguna firma espectral en la base de datos del Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). El fenómeno es llamado SCP 06F6 y aún no está asociado con ningún objeto en el espacio.
"We compared the spectra to all supernova types using the X2 fitting program described in Howell et al. (2005) as well as the program SNID (Blondin & Tonry 2007). No match was found with either program". (Barbary et al. 2008: 3-4)
"In an effort to identify objects with similar spectra, we cross-correlated the broad features of the spectrum with the SDSS spectral database. Each SDSS spectrum was warped with a polynomial function to best fit the Keck spectrum, based on a least squares fit. The value of the root mean square of the difference between the spectra was used to determine the correlation. An allowance for relative redshift was made, with the requirement that the spectra overlapped in the range of the strongest features (3500 to 6200 °A). No convincing matches were found". (Barbary et al. 2008: 5).
Se sugiere que el fenómeno es de una nueva clase. Me recuerda a la historia de los cuasares; y también a la señal WOW!.
