Menze and Ur (2012) publican un método de análisis masivo de imágenes de satélite, para la localización extensiva e intensiva de asentamientos humanos antiguos. Comentado por Gewing (2012).

La clave es el volumen de montículos como reflejo de la ocupación humana continua y la firma espectral del remanente de dichos asentamientos: los antrosoles resaltan en su comparación con los suelos no alterados.

Lo novedoso del método, es la consideración del volumen de montículos vía DEM y la automatización de la interpretación espectral como serie multi-temporal, con el entrenamiento del algoritmo de clasificación "random forest" para discriminar "asentamiento" vs. "no asentamiento".
